Creating highlights and shadows

Creating highlights and shadows can really make any image even better. By creating an empty layer filled with 50% grey, changing the blend mode of the layer to softlight . You can use that layer to burn and dodge and create a feeling of depth. You can remove small unwanted shadows this way as well as create more contrast by selectivly burning the shadows. If you want to add a natural looking highlight, create an empty layer above your retouching layers. Draw a white line with the pencil tool on the area in which you want to create the highlight. Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian and blur the line until you create a natural looking highlight. Then you can work with the layer opacity to make it look as natural as possible. If the highlight is too large you van add a layer mak filled with black and paint in the area with white using the brush tool.

Inverse Highpass skin Softening Technique

After you finish your retouching layers,
1- Create a merged layer copy -Shift+Alt+Cmd+E
2-Invert your layer Cmd+I
3-Convert to smart object in order to have more flexibility in editing
4-Change your layer blending mode to vivid light.
5-Apply High Pass filter Filter-Other-HighPass- choose around 12 -15 pixels, experiment.
6-Filter-blur-Gaussian choose approximately 1/3 of the number that you chose for your high pass pixel amount.
If you find that you don't have enough texture change to linear light blend mode.
Create a layer mask filled with black ALT click+ Add Layer Mask
paint with white in the areas of the skin that you want to use the texture that you have created in. You can use the brush with opacities to blend all of the areas together better. If you find that the texture is too obvious try lessening the opacity of the layer.
