Making the most of Highlights

If your image has some subtle highlights that you want to make really stand out but not blow out you can try this simple method
-Make a merged copy above your retouching layers
-Make a color range selection of the highlight areas-turn off localized clusters
-Make a new adjustment layer>solid color set the RGB setting to R=252 G=252 B=252 so that this highlight area will not be lost on printing
-Highlight your mask
-Set your history to the current state
-Fill the Mask with black, CTRL+Backspace
Paint with the history brush to reveal only the areas that you want to. The history brush will not allow you to reveal any parts of the image that were not part of the original selection area.
-ALT+click on the mask to see the mask in your work space. You can blur the mask to create a softer edge to the new highlight
-lessen the layer opacity if you find that the highlight is too aggressive

The eyes have it!

If you compare the eye on the left, with only basic touch ups, with the eye on right you will notice that it has lost some very pink veins and some reflections as well as gained some eyelashes. Here's how it happened

The clean up of the eye itself was basic starting with creating a new layer then using healing brush as well as the brush tool with the white of the eye color chosen to heal and paint over the veins. You want the final product to be clean but not without shape or texture.

The pupil had a slightly irregular shape by using the marquee selection tool, selecting a portion of the pupil, copy paste Shift CMD+C, CMD+V onto a new layer , rotating it >Edit>Transform >Rotate, covering the irregular portion with the new regular shape.Alt+click on create layer mask to create a mask filled with black. Paint with white over the area that you want to reveal.

To create the new lashes:

Make a selection around a good lash or section of lashes.
Copy paste-Shift CMD+C ,CMD+V
create a layer mask filled with white
paint out extra information with the brush tool using black.
Change the layer blend mode to darken.
Delete the mask
Turn the layer into a smart object.
Select the layer with the new lash on it.
Move the lash to a new location using the move tool>V
Hold down the alt key to copy to a new layer.
Use the transform tool CMD+T warp to curve the lashes into appropriate shapes.

Repeat the last 3 steps until you have enough lashes

CMYK Comparison Print

Make 2 prints. 1 on the regular paper that you use to print on weather it be matte or glossy.
Use the target print located in the DL-6 folder in the public area of the drop box along with one of your own images on the same canvas.
Take the same file soft proof using the CMYK profile
After soft proofing print the image on CMYK paper. You can get the paper from the equipment room it costs $1.00/sheet.
Hand in the 2 prints, with your observations. How did you get your image to be similar. what are the differences between the 2 images. If the 2 prints are not similar, how would you make them more similar?
You can post your observations on your blog or make a hard copy

Creating highlights and shadows

Creating highlights and shadows can really make any image even better. By creating an empty layer filled with 50% grey, changing the blend mode of the layer to softlight . You can use that layer to burn and dodge and create a feeling of depth. You can remove small unwanted shadows this way as well as create more contrast by selectivly burning the shadows. If you want to add a natural looking highlight, create an empty layer above your retouching layers. Draw a white line with the pencil tool on the area in which you want to create the highlight. Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian and blur the line until you create a natural looking highlight. Then you can work with the layer opacity to make it look as natural as possible. If the highlight is too large you van add a layer mak filled with black and paint in the area with white using the brush tool.

Inverse Highpass skin Softening Technique

After you finish your retouching layers,
1- Create a merged layer copy -Shift+Alt+Cmd+E
2-Invert your layer Cmd+I
3-Convert to smart object in order to have more flexibility in editing
4-Change your layer blending mode to vivid light.
5-Apply High Pass filter Filter-Other-HighPass- choose around 12 -15 pixels, experiment.
6-Filter-blur-Gaussian choose approximately 1/3 of the number that you chose for your high pass pixel amount.
If you find that you don't have enough texture change to linear light blend mode.
Create a layer mask filled with black ALT click+ Add Layer Mask
paint with white in the areas of the skin that you want to use the texture that you have created in. You can use the brush with opacities to blend all of the areas together better. If you find that the texture is too obvious try lessening the opacity of the layer.
